medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. September) is the feast day of:
Pulcheria Aelia (d. 453) The Eastern Roman Pulcheria became regent at the
age of 15 for her younger brother Theodosius II. After her regency ended,
she built churches and fought Nestorianism. In 447 P. entered a convent,
but when her brother died in 450 she returned and married the general
Marcion, who then became emperor. The two together planned the council of
Chalcedon (451).
Finnian of Moville (d. 579) The Irish Finnian, of royal blood, was
educated at St. Ninian's monastery of Whithorn (Scotland). He then
returned to Ireland, where he founded monasteries at Moville and Dromin.
Finnian became a famous teacher; his students included Columcille.
Aubert of Avranches (d. c. 725) Nothing is known of this bishop of
Avranches except that he originated the great pilgrimage shrine of
Mont-Saint-Michel. Legend reports that on three occasions he fell asleep
on the Rocher de la Tombe and dreamed that the archangel Michael told him
to build a church on that place. So the church was built, and dedicated in
709; Aubert was buried in it. The Benedictine monastery on the Mount was
established later.
Nicholas of Tolentino (d. 1305) Nicholas, who was born in the march of
Ancona (Italy), became an Augustinian friar at the age of 18. He gained a
reputation as a miracle-worker, and was an immediate success when he
settled in Tolentino, both as a notable preacher and for his pastoral care.
He also appears to have been good at converting notorious sinners.
Nicholas' canonization process began immediately after his death, but was
not completed until 1446 because of the Great Schism.
