medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. September) is the feast day of:
Ferreolus of Vienne (d. c. 305) Ferreolus met his death by offering
himself in place of a man who had been condemned to death. He is regarded
as a martyr---and patron saint of prisoners.
Methodius of Olympus (d. c. 310) Methodius is called "of Olympus," but
actually it is not certain of which see he was bishop, except that it was
probably in Asia Minor. He is regarded as a martyr, but even that is not
certain. Methodius is remembered for his surviving writings, the best
known of which is the Plato-style dialogue entitled "Symposium" or "Banquet
of the Ten Virgins," which lauds virginity.
Richardis (d. 893 or 896) Richardis, a daughter of the count of Alsace,
married the Frankish king Charles the Fat in 862. In 881 she was crowned
empress. Richardis was accused of adultery, but cleared herself with an
ordeal by fire (like Kunigunde). Then she withdrew to the convent of
Andlau (Alsace) that she had founded. Pope Leo IX canonized Richardis in
1049.
Lambert of Freising (d. 957) Lambert became bishop of Freising in 937. He
is most notable for the legend that at his prayer a thick layer of fog hid
the cathedral of Freising, preventing its destruction by Magyar raiders.
