Help Mums and Dads Surf the Net Through the People's Network
London, 06 August 2002 -- Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives
and Libraries and Parents Online 2002 are encouraging all public library
services to log onto www.parentsonline.gov.uk and get involved in this
year's celebrations.
Following the success of Parents Online Week 2001, when libraries,
schools, Internet cafes and UK online centres opened their doors to
parents wanting to learn how to use the Internet, this year's Parents
Online Week will run from 30 September to 4 October 2002. By then many
library services will have most of their People's Network facilities in
place so it would be an ideal opportunity to celebrate this achievement
as well as encourage parents and children to get online.
More than 600 events were held across the UK last year, ranging from
yoga classes to children's Internet breakfasts and cyber swimathons.
With a large number of events already registered in 2002, Parents Online
anticipates that this year's initiative will be even bigger and better
than before.
"We want to make it easy for parents to understand the educational
benefits of the net so we are inviting parents, schools, and community
centres to get involved by holding a Parents Online event in their local
area sometime this year," said Rhodri Jones, spokesperson for Parents
Online. "Organisers can register their events by logging onto the
Parents Online website where a map of the UK displays all of the events
taking place nation-wide."
Chris Batt, Acting Chief Executive of Resource said: "With seventy per
cent of public libraries already online, the People's Network offers an
enormous opportunity to promote this hugely important campaign. I very
much hope to see library services amongst the most fun and imaginative
participants in the campaign."
Parents Online is a Department for Education and Skills (DfES)
initiative. Its primary function is to make online educational content
accessible and interesting to parents. By bringing both parents and
children together to learn about the Internet and how to use it safely,
it aims to strengthen home-school links and make parents aware of the
support they can give their children using Information Communications
Technology (ICT), in schools.
The Parents Online website www.parentsonline.gov.uk is a portal for
parents to access some of the best Internet sites for their children's
education and specialises in cyber journeys each month. The website was
nominated in the 2002 Government Website Awards and was a finalist in
the Best Web Campaign category. It is accessible all year round and is
being relaunched in August 2002 with enhanced community content, web
building tools and bulletin boards.
