medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. August) is the feast day of:
Eusebius of Rome (d. c. 357) Eusebius was a priest and the founder of a
church in Rome. According to late Acta, he died a martyr in the reign of
the Arian Constantius, imprisoned until his death after protesting papal
acquiescence to Arian demands.
Marcellus of Apamaea (d. 389) Marcellus was a native of Cyprus. He
entered the imperial service and was so popular as civil magistrate of
Apamaea (Syria) that he was elected bishop. When Emperor Theodosius
ordered the destruction of the temples of the Greco-Roman gods, Marcellus
took on the task with some enthusiasm. He destroyed the temple of Zeus in
Apamaea, then went on to a series of others. Finally a mob of old
believers got fed up with it, and Marcellus was martyred by being thrown
into the flames of a temple he had set on fire.
Athanasia of Constantinople (d. 860) Athanasia was born on the island of
Aegina. She was married twice. She and husband #2 did good works
together, until they decided to abandon married life. He became a monk;
she converted their home into a convent. Fame of the austerity and good
works of the nuns reached the empress (Theodora; not the infamous one), who
summoned Athanasia to Constantinople to help restore the holy images at the
end of the iconoclast destruction. Athanasia worked in Constantinople for
seven years, dying there in 860.
