medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. July) is the feast day of:
Daniel (5th cent. BCE) The prophet Daniel died in Babylon on this day,
according to the Roman martyrology. In the MA, Alexandria and then Venice
claimed his relics.
Praxedes (1st-2nd cent.) Praxedes was a Roman virgin. According to
legend, she was converted to Christianity by Peter. Her cult, however,
does not go back to early Rome; the earliest reference to her is from the
seventh century. Her cult was suppressed in 1969.
Victor (d. c. 290) Victor was a Roman soldier, martyred at Marseilles
during Maximian's persecution. Victor's shrine at Marseilles became one of
the most important pilgrimage centers in Gaul at an early age, and his cult
spread to much of western Europe.
Arbogast (mid-7th cent.) Arbogast was made bishop of Strassburg by the
Frankish king Dagobert I. He founded several monasteries in his diocese,
and seems to have lived at least part of his life as a hermit.
Oddino Barrotti (blessed) (d. 1400) Oddino was born in Fossano (Piedmont,
Italy) in 1324. He became a parish priest and Franciscan tertiary, but
resigned his parish and converted his house into a hospital. Oddino was
beatified in 1808.
