medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Oops. I read my source backwards. I thought Farmer (Oxford Dictionary of
Sts) said that the Cistercian General Chapter of 1683 moved Stephen
Harding's feast FROM 16 July TO 17 April. You're right. 16. July is his
feast. Stephen Harding, important Cistercian who died in 1134 (on 28
March, by the way; it's not clear why he's celebrated today, at least to
me). Author of the Carta Caritatis, which shaped the Cistercian order, and
also sent out the monastic swarms that founded La Ferte, Pontigny,
Clairvaux, and Morimond. Never papally canonized, Stephen was voted into
holiness by the Cistercian General Chapter only in 1623.
