medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Sarah,
If you can get across to Dublin, Ireland, you can see the Book of Kells (8th Century, illuminate gospel book), in the Library of Trinity College. Like those in the British Library this is kept open on a different page, changed periodically. The College and Library are well worth seeing for themselves, incidentally.
You could also try some of the Cathedral Libraries in the UK, such as those at Exeter, Canterbury and Hereford (chailed library with many medieval books). You'd have to look up their websites, and find out the opening times/access rules. There's also the Vatican Library in Rome, and the Bodleian in Oxford.
In the British Library, by the way, they now have a computerised 3D colour version of the Lindisfarne Gospels, where you can turn the pages by running your hands over the screen. This is a fantastic experience.
Good wishes,
Graham.

'"The secret of a joyful life is to live dangerously." A joyful life is an active life - it is not a dull, static state of so-called happiness. Full of the burning fire of enthusiasm, anarchic, revolutionary, energetic, daemonic, Dionysian, filled to overflowing with the terrific urge to create - such is the life of the man who risks safety and happiness for the sake of growth and happiness.'
Frederick William Sanderson, 1857-1922.
