medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (19. July) is the feast day of:
Justa and Rufina (d. 287) These two sisters of Seville made and sold
earthenware pots for a living. According to legend, they were martyred
after refusing to use their wares in pagan practices (?). J & R were
tortured, killed, and their bodies burned. They are highly honored in the
Moazarabic liturgy.
Macrina the Younger (d. 379) Macrina was the big sister of Basil and
Gregory of Nyssa (both of whom wrote about her). She was educated by their
mother in the Bible as well as household skills. At the age of twelve,
Macrina was betrothed, but after her fiance died she refused all other
possible matches, instead educating her younger siblings and then living a
monastic life.
Arsenius (d. c. 412) Arsenius was apparently born in Rome, where later
legend reports that he was a deacon and later tutor to the sons of
Theodosius I. Sometime around the year 400 he joined the monks in Egypt.
44 of his maxims survive among the Sayings of the Desert Fathers.
Aurea of Cordoba (d. 856) Aurea was the child of a Christian mother and a
Muslim father. She became a Christian and a nun at Cutaclara. But at some
point Aurea renounced her faith---and then later repented her deed, which
of course made her an apostate in the eyes of the Muslim government. She
was martyred after her family denounced her.
Hroznata of Bohemia (blessed) (d. 1217) Hroznata was a Bohemian nobleman.
After his wife and only child died, he founded the Premonstratensian
monastery of Tepl. He himself was semi-martyred---thrown into a dungeon by
robbers, where he starved to death.
