The map library here at Portsmouth is going to lose its remote storage area
and has been given until Friday 2nd August to dispose of about 5000 map
sheets. Our collection of 1971 Census planning maps form Part 1 of this
disposal - details below.
In 1993 the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys, as it was then known,
disposed of its surplus copies of the enumeration district planning maps from
the 1971 Census. We acquired the maps covering Hampshire and the Isle of
Wight, which comprises about 3000 sheets at 1:1250, 1:2500 and 1:10560.
The agreement with OPCS stated that the maps were issued on a long term
'loan' basis and that 'The maps must not be destroyed and reasonable care
should be taken to maintain their condition. OPCS should be kept informed of
any plans to further remove, re-distribute or re-locate the map sets as
supplied'. I have contacted the ONS and they are happy for the collection to be
re-located. I am offering the maps for disposal as a COMPLETE SET ONLY and
will inform the ONS of their owner once a new home has been found.
The maps are stored in two Elite (?) suspended plan cabinets which are also
offered as part of this disposal. The cabinet measurements are
Height 1100mm
Width 960mm
Depth 740mm
THE RECIPIENT WOULD HAVE TO MAKE THEIR OWN ARRANGEMENTS FOR
COLLECTION AND TRANSPORTATION.
Please contact me off-list by Friday 26th July if you are interested.
