medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Yes, Kyriakos = Cyr (I was still in my German saints' encyclopedias days
when I wrote that entry). Farmer in the Oxford Dictionary of Saints adds
that Cyr was very popular in France (his relics made it there from Antioch
in the fourth century), especially because of the story (included in the
Golden Legend) that Charlemagne in a dream was nearly killed by a wild
boar, but was saved by a child who suddenly appeared and promised to rescue
Charlemagne if the emperor would give him clothes. The bishop of Nevers
interpreted this as a request from the saint to have the roof of Nevers
cathedral (dedicated to St. Cyr) repaired. Thus St. Cyr has the very odd
iconography of a naked child riding on a wild boar.
You've got me as far as the military academy goes---the only one I can name
is Westpoint.
