medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. June) is the feast day of:
Ithamar (d. 656) Ithamar was a native of Kent. He became a monk and in
644 became the first Anglo-Saxon bishop, ruling Rochester as successor of
the Italian Paulinus.
Landrich of Paris (d. c. 661) Landrich was bishop of Paris from 650 until
his death. He founded the first hospital in Paris, the Hotel-Dieu.
Evermund (d. c. 720) Evermund was a soldier in his home town of Bayeux
(France). With his wife's agreement, he became a monk, founded several
monasteries in the diocese of Seez, and led one of them as abbot (his wife
entered one of the nunneries he founded).
Oliva of Palermo (9th or 10th cent.) Oliva is venerated in Palermo and
Tunis. According to legend she lived in the ninth or tenth century on
Sicily. Driven away by enemies of the faith, she retreated to the forest,
where she lived peacefully with wild animals. Finally she was taken
captive, deported to Tunis, and killed at the order of the governor.
Diana of Andalo (blessed) (d. 1236) Diana was born in Bologna. She and
her two companions (Cecilia and Amata) were the first inhabitants of the
Dominican convent of Bologna. She was beatified in 1891.
Henry of Bozen (blessed) (d. 1315) Henry, called San Rigo in Italy, was
from Bozen, born in c. 1250. He earned a living as a carrier first in
Bozen and then in Treviso (northern Italy). Later Henry became a hermit.
Already highly honored during his lifetime, Henry's reputation increased
after several hundred miracles at his tomb in Treviso cathedral.
Giovanni Dominici (blessed) (d. 1419) Giovanni was born in Florence in
1356 and in 1374 entered the Dominican order. He was one of the greatest
preachers of his time, a papal legate, close advisor of the pope, a
reformer of the Order of Preachers, and the holder of a series of important
offices in the order. In 1408 Gregory XII named Giovanni cardinal and
archbishop of Ragusa. He played an energetic role in ending the western
schism. Giovanni was beatified in 1832.
