medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. May) is the feast day of:
Julius the Veteran (d. 304) Julius was a Roman soldier, according to
traditin for 27 years. After his discharge from the army, he was caught in
Diocletian's persecution and executed, probably at Dorostorum on the
Danube.
Bruno of Wurzburg (d. 1045) Never formally canonized, but honored as a
saint in Wurzburg since at least c. 1200. The son of Conrad of Carinthia
and Mathilda of Swabia, Bruno became bishop of Wurzburg in 1034. He was
one of the leading churchmen of his time, highly honored for his learning
and his virtuous life.
Frederick of Liege (d. 1121) Frederick became bishop of Liege in 1119. He
was outstanding in his office, but suffered much from his enemies. Some
sources report that his death ws due to poison.
Margaret Pole (blessed) (d. 1541) The English Margaret Pole, born in 1473,
was the governess of Mary Tudor, eldest daughter of Henry VIII (aka Bloody
Mary). Margaret fell into the king's disfavor because her son, Archbishop
Reginald Pole, opposed Henry's ecclesiastical policies (and I seem to
recall a problem of having too good a claim to the throne, too). Henry had
another of Margaret's sons executed, then a year later Margaret herself was
killed. She is accounted a martyr, and was beatified in 1886.
