medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (11. May) is the feast day of:
Philip (d. c. 80) Philip was one of the apostles, originally a follower of
John the Baptist. After the resurrection, Philip missionized first in his
homeland and then Phrygia, where he is supposed to have converted many.
According to an uncertain tradition, Philip was martyred in Phrygia at the
age of 87, nailed to a cross and then stoned to death.
Theophista (d. c. 250) Theophista was probably from Camerino (Italy),
where her cult was active for many centuries. She was baptized, together
with her husband and their six children. After that, Theophista and co.
were all killed in a Christian persecution.
Tudy (5th/6th cent.) Tudy (Tudec) was a missionary, monastery founder, and
abbot in Brittany.
Gangold (d. 760) According to legend, Gangold was a Burgundian noble,
active at the Merovingian court. Gangold discovered that a cleric was
committing adultery with his wife, whereupon the cleric had Gangold
murdered. A cult of Gangold spread rapidly, and from the ninth century on,
Gangold was honored as a martyr.
Fremund (d. c. 866) According to legend, Fremund was a song of King Otta
of Mercia. He lived as a hermit, and was killed by invading Danes.
Majolus of Cluny (d. 994) Majolus became the fourth abbot of Cluny in 965.
He was born in c. 910 in southern France, where he was first an archdeacon
and later became a Cluniac monk. In Majolus' administration, the Cluniac
reform spread rapidly. There is still a pilgrimage to his tomb in
Souvigny.
Aloysius Rabata (blessed) (d. 1490) Aloysius was born in Sicily in c.
1430. He entered the Carmelite order and became prior of Randazzo
(Sicily). He was highly honored for his goodness and gift of forgiveness,
which he even exercised toward attackers who injured him so badly that he
died. Aloysius was beatified in 1842.
