medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
IIRC it was the responsibility of the father to name his legitimate children
and for a mother to name the child if it were a bastard.
In the *Historia calamitatum* Abelard says specifically that Heloise named
their son Astralabe (for reasons I am still fathoming!) and at that point
they were not yet married.
If you look at genealogical tables for the period, you will see that very
often the same group of Christian names is repeated in a family over several
generations, (e.g. Fulks & Geoffreys in the House of Anjou) the sons being
named after their fathers or their (paternal) uncles. However, sometimes a
Christian name from the Mother's side creeps in, especially if the marriage
was significant. The name Philip was introduced into the French Royal House
in 1050s when Henry I married the Eastern princess Anne of Kiev who brought
Orthodox saints and traditions with her. Their eldest (surviving) son was
Philip I
