medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I have been thinking about some of the forged Monte Cassino lives forged by
Peter the Deacon in the mid 12th century. One of the features of these
lives is the spectacular martyrdoms of the protagonists. I was wondering if
the various monastic houses were concerned to increase the number of martyrs
in their history, as the importance of martyrdom revived in the age of the
early crusades.
I was wondering in this regard whether there were any Cistercian martyrs ,
real or fictitious, who were celebrated as early as say the 1130s. Can
anyone enlighten me in this regard?
thanks,
