medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. March) is the feast day of:
Leobin (Lubin) (d. 557) Leobin was a peasant from the area around
Poitiers. He became a monk, then a priest, then abbot, and finally bishop
of Chartres. He was noted for his care of others, and honored as a saint
in his lifetime.
Boniface Curitan of Ross (d. c. 630) Boniface was a Roman, who became an
evangelist among the Scots. He enjoyed great success and became bishop of
Ross; according to the Aberdeen Breviary, Boniface founded 150 churches and
oratories in Scotland.
Mathilda (d. 968) Mathilda, born in 895, was the second wife of the German
king Henry I. She was active in charitable works and founded several
monasteries, including Quedlinburg. The two vitae of Mathilda show her as
an ideal of royal holiness.
Paulina of Thuringia (blessed) (d. 1107) Paulina was born in c. 1067. She
married twice, and after the death of her second husband she and some
like-minded women retreated to the eremitical life in the Thuringian
Forest. There she founded the monastery of Marienzella, stocking it with
monks from Hirsau. She died on a trip to Hirsau, but in 1122 her remains
were taken to her newly erected monastic church, which was then named
Paulinzella after her. It became a significant pilgrimage locale.
