medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There's an Italian/English prose edition in three volumes, translated by
John D. Sinclair (Oxford, 1940-ish).
How do you define "best" English translation? Most accurate? Most moving?
I get the most pleasure from reading Dorothy Sayers' translation, which
with rather amazing agility maintains the terza rima structure, but it's
probably not the most accurate (it also has the advantage that Sayers was a
sound theologian, so the notes are often excellent). For sheer poetry, I
also recommend the Henry Cary translation, made sometime around 1800.
