medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
from the XIIIth century, the hereditary office of Vidame is honorific,
without any specific charge.

helas, MG, i know not from Vidames of so late a vintage (16th c.? --i've
never
read the book), only a few from the late 11th-13th cc.
this --or a similar-- question came up a year or so ago, perhaps on the
medieval history list, during a general discussion of Vidames.
something about the office of Chartrain Vidame passing (by marriage,
presumably) into the family of the Counts of Ve^ndome (about the time that
the
"Vendome" chapel was built into the South East corner of the nave of the
cathedral???).
i can't even recall the substance of that post, however.
during the earlier period the hereditary office of Vidame passed through the
hands of at least two or three families by marriage (they seem to have had a
problem generating and/or keeping alive male heirs) and there were at least
two "Vidamesses," occupying the office either because there was no male heir
or because the heir was a minor.
curious, because one of the main duties --to the extent that i've been able
to
figure out what the devil the Vidame's duties/functions actually were-- was
as
the knightly "champion" of the Bishop and the commander of his "vassals" who
owed him military service _en fief_.
not much help.
