medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear All,
I just read the following account in a history of German theatre:
During the time of Charles the Great the Histriones and Joculatores had fallen
into such disrepute that in the year 791 Alcuin, very disturbed about the
matter, exclaimed: "Whoever admits Histriones, Mimists and Dancers into his
house has no idea what a multitide of unclean spirits will follow them."
Can anyone tell me more about this? To my knowledge, very little is known
about performance of any kind during this period and this is an intriguing
lead. Did Alcuin have more to say somewhere else? Are there other similar
sources?
Thanks. yrs, tom ault
