medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
A vidame was appointed by a bishop to manage his temporal estates. A French
vicedomini.
I apologise for the "vidame of the king" I was thinking specifically of Jean
de Picquigny, vidame of Amiens, who acted as enqueteur for Philippe le Bel
in Languedoc in 1300. He wouldn't have put his vote in for either Gui or
D'Ablis, but had quite a lot of power.
