medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
To James Mills,
On the representation of Christ, you might want to look atAlain Besançon,
L`image interdite. Une histoire intellectuelle de l`iconoclasme, Paris,
Fayard, 1994, p. 153 ff, p. 162 (Letter of Eusebius of Caesarea, (Eusèbe de
Césarée) to Constantia, sister of the emperor : who does not admit any
representation of the divine in Christ).
I do not have my Denzinger with me, but Besançon quotes two canonical
interventions: one from the council "Quinisexte in 692" or "concile "in
Trullo" "-- see three canons : c. 73 on the use of the cross, c. 82 on
replacing symbols by figures and c. 100 on asceticism in representations --
and the 2nd council of Nicea in 787. ( On the 13th of October 787, refers
to Boespflug, F. and Lossky, Nicolas (ed.), Nicée II, Paris, Ed. du Cerf,
1987 p. 33-35; is a collection of articles, see p. 271-301 for a discussion
of the period from the VIIIth c. to the XIIIth)
Following Besançon, there has never been in Occident a debate on the
divine image as profound and thorough as in the Oriental church (p. 204).
The key text is
Grégoire le Grand, Epistola XIII. Ad Serenum Massiliensem episcopum, PL
(Patrologie de Migne, t. LXXVII, col. 1128-1130) (Daniele Menozzi, Les
images, L`Eglise et les Arts visuels, Paris, Ed. du Cerf, 1991; an
anthology of the main texts of the Magisterium on the question of images)
(see p. 205).
I hope this is of some help. I am not a specialist of Medieval religion, I
just happened to be consulting this book.
Cordially, Georges Tissot
