and, yet another.
thanks to the ever-vigilent Brenda, who contacted me off-list, i can save
hundreds of members of this list who might be searching in vain for the
edition of the chaters from St-Maur-des-Fossés which i signaled here thousands
of hours.
turns out that the book i had in mind was:
A. Terroine and L. Fossier, _Chartes et Documents de l’Abbaye de
Saint-Magloire. Tome I: Fin du Xe siècle-1280._ [Paris/Turnhout]: CNRS
Editions/Brepols, 1998.
as we say in the used book dodge, this was an Algore (“close but no cigar”
--apologies to our non-Amerikan members, but that one is *not* translatable),
i.e., All Saints whose name begins with “M” may look alike but they are not
the same.
the good news is that this is aparently the first volume in a new series,
“Chartriers des anciennes Abbayes de la Ville de Paris,” which, will doubtless
be a very important contribution to our knowledge of What Was Going On, En Ces
Temps Là, when and if any further volumes in the series appear.
it has always struck me as curious that the French made a good start on
publishing the original sources of the institutions of their capital city with
the early publication of the cartulary of the Cathedral (by Guèrard in the
1840s), but then seem to have dropped the ball a bit.
a few decades later, Leopold Delisle put together a “Cartulaire géneral de
Paris” (only the first vol. of which was published), sort of a mish-mash of
arbritarially chosen charters taken from numerous _fonds_ (some few of which
have never been published subsequently).
and, Joseph Depoin, that indefatigable editor, published a good percentage of
the surviving charters from Saint-Martin-des-Champs and also from
Saint-Germain-des_Près in nearly-decent editions at the end of the century.
but, after that, it almost looks as though the senseless masacre of a whole
generation of young scholars in the ’14-’18 Acute Collective Psychotic Episode
had, among other things, the effect of, well, putting On Hold the publication
of editions of middlevil charters.
and it is only in recent decades that things have picked up a bit.
anyway, you all can now stop looking for the new edition of the St-Maur
cartulary.
or, let me know if you find it.
