medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Well, for centuries it was a royal abbey (which is the seat of an abbot, but
not a cathedral, properly speaking; but often a basilica; which is in later
medieval and modern times, a special designation by the Vatican for an
important church that is not necessarily a cathedral or bishop's seat. )

well, i'll be jiggered.
by that time the faubourg's working class population had swelled to some
kind
of peak, i should think.
i haven't been there since about 1980, when the Pompiebougoises were tearing
everything down (without thorough excavations!!!) and blasting Metro
stations
through, prelude to Extensive Gentrification, which i assume has taken place
by now.

it would just about have to, wouldn't it?

nor i (though i have to say i wasn't looking for them, either).
nor have i ever seen the building refered to in legitimate print as anything
other than a "basilique."
thanks, Colmán.
