medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Tom,
In response to your question about your psalter, I did a quick check on
King Edward the Martyr and Richard of Chichester in Francis Wormald's
"English Benedictine Calendars After AD 1100," vols 1 & 2 (18 calendars
all together). Checking the dates that Farmer supplies in his Oxford
Dictionary of Saints (Edward 18 Mar, tr 20 Jun; Richard 3 Apr, tr 16 Jun),
I found no calendar that included all four commemorations. Edward alone
is fairly common, but by no means universal; Richard appears far less
frequently. I found only three calendars that included the primary feast
for both saints: one from Abbotsbury in Dorset (1:1-13); one from
Chertsey in Surrey (1:81-93); and one from Westminster Abbey (2:57-74).
I found only one entry for a translation, Richard's, and that was in the
Chertsey calendar as well. I'm not sure how reliable *Benedictine*
calendars are for determining the distribution of these feasts, especially
in the case of Richard, but it appears you may have identifed an unusual
combination that my be useful in localizing the ms.
You might contact Richard Pfaff at the University of North Carolina, who
is very knowledgable about English calendars.
Best wishes,
John
