medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. January) is the feast day of:
Bathilde (d. 680) Bathilde was born in England in c. 630, but as a child
was captured by pirates, taken to the kingdom of the Franks, and sold to
King Clovis (Chlodwig?) II's mayor of the palace. In c. 648 Clovis married
her. After her husband's death, Bathilde acted as regent for her underage
son. She founded the monasteries of Chelles and Corbie. Finally she
herself entered the convent of Chelles in 675.
Adelgunde (d. c. 700) Adelgunde, born in c. 630, founded the nunnery of
Maubeuge in northern Francia in c. 661, serving as first abbess. Maubeuge
still has one of her sandals and her veil as relics.
Ambrosius Autpert (d. 784) Born in Francia in the first half of the eighth
century, Ambrosius Autpert became a monk and abbot. Also an important
theological writer. He died while on a journey to Rome.
Adelelm (d. 1097) Adelelm (Lesmes) was a native of Loudin, France. In
1079 he became abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Chaise-Dieu in the
Auvergne. (A very prestigious monastery of the time, founded in 1046---the
first eight abbots are all venerated as saints.) In c. 1084 Adelelm went
on to found the monastery of San Juan de Burgos in northern Spain, becoming
its first abbot.
