I agree that practical reason (designing) lies somewhere between the
polarizations of academic discourse. This is because "the practical" seems
to be antithetical to polarization, perhaps for reasons of "engagement" (or
complexity. There are several alternative conceptual frameworks to choose
from here).
I believe academic discourse produces either artificial, or artificially
extreme, polarizations (as mentioned in my earlier postings). On the other
hand I am struck that it seems to be integral to the alternative method of
writers such as Dewey and Bourdieu to use a non-polarizing rhetoric. This
can make them sound uncritical in comparison with traditional techniques
when employing inductive arguments. However, they seem to describe
situations that my students recognize in practice.
