Peter & Simon,
You might look at Jonathan Rosenbaum's Movie Wars from Wallflower for its
polemic on behalf of an intelligent reviewing practice, as opposed to
distributor-driven hype. Jonathan Romney's foreword to his review collection
Short Orders casts a jaundiced eye on the metropolitan screening circuit and
its outpourrings.
Might I also venture an extract from a forthcoming book in which I discuss,
autobiographically, the metropolitan and regional climate out of which
contemporary film journalism derives (or doesn't derive) inspiration.
I am also working on an encyclopedia of film writers, with a section devoted
to reviewers.
