I, like many others, have, in the past assumed unthinkly that VLE is all
about content. Having now completed an online WebCT course I can say that it
is just as much about new ways of collaborating with fellow students and
tutors as it is about content.
The "clean slate" seems to have been replaced by the "empty VLE". Just set
students a simple collaborative task to do online and see how much "light"
this generates.
The fact that we don't know how to assess this activity shouldn't stop us
taking full advantage of improvements in retention and achievement that can
be achieved through use of email and discussion groups.
In fact why buy an MLE at all when this can be done very successfully using
Exchange 2000 email and discussion groups with Web tools giving remote
access to anywhere?
