Let's remember that Olympic athletes have trainers, and intensive training
programmes, even where it might be claimed they are 'amateurs' because their
salaried job is something else. Even so, most would prefer to be
professional athletes these days. Perhaps it is only in UK society, with its
continuing stratified class hangovers, that the 'cult of the amateur' is
still highly regarded. And higher education is one of that cult's last
bastions! Research is the salaried job, and teaching something you do in
your spare time. If you get good enough, and treat it seriously (more than
your real job) you might, if you are lucky on the day with the track the
wind and the competition, get to the podium and receive an ILT Teaching
Fellowship. Just like those spunky Brits in the film Chariots of Fire. An
example to us all.
