The British Library already has most vols. in the series referred to, which
I think is Biblioteca de narrativa popular. We are making efforts to obtain
the missing nos.
All the vols. we currently hold, and any we can acquire, can be borrowed via
ILL.

A question for the Librarians amongst us - has anyone else
seen this/decided to buy it? And if so would you be
prepared to lend volumes to others? It looks like a bargain
but we are limited in funds and space so it would be
helpful to know if others will be acquiring it.
Many thanks,

Dear colleagues,
William Christian writes me to say that an important Spanish oral
history collection, now available at the liquidation price of 150
Euros for the 25-volume set, is about to be remaindered by the
publisher and disappear from circulation. He urges us to contact our
libraries quickly to get hold of one of the remaining 200 sets. Bill
says:
I believe I mentioned to you a remarkable series of peasant autobiographies
compiled by a wonderful retired Jesuit, Antonio Zavala (he has also
collected and published 300 volumes of Basque oral poetry) the series is now
complete with 25 volumes, and includes the lives of people from Cantabria,
Huesca, Navarra, Burgos, Asturias, Leon, Badajoz, y Jaen. The result is a
fresco of vernacular 20th century life, including the Civil War, as seen
from below and from the margins, and for me has totally revised my
notions of Spanish history. I should say that Zavala often found his
people by asking around for people who knew verses, so the books are
chock full of verses, sometimes music, and other cultural materials,
and in wonderful local lexicons.
He says there are also 7 sets remaining of the Auspoa collection of
bertsolaris, these all in Basque.
The publisher is

I hope that despite the budget crunch all round some of us will be
able to help preserve and diffuse this important historical source.
Best regards,
Dorry Noyes
