Bringing human rights to life in the classroom.
Teaching pack available free of charge.
Dear all,
The Council of Europe has published a new teaching pack for secondary
schools entitled "The European Convention on Human Rights - starting
points for teachers". This is available in English, French, German, Italian
and Russian as well as most former Eastern Bloc languages (see below).
There is no Spanish (Castilian) version.
Through their contact with young people, teachers can play a vital role in
helping to construct a society based on human rights. This publication aims
to introduce human rights into the classroom by providing starting points
and suggesting some interactive activities; it is designed primarily for
working with 14-18 year olds.
Constructed in the form of a folder, Starting Points contains:
O five basic information sheets on the Convention and the human rights
work of the Council of Europe, and
O ten sheets with suggestions for classroom activities on human rights
education, which place emphasis on relating human rights standards to
school students' everyday lives.
Produced and edited by the Council of Europe's Public Relations Division,
text written by Mark Taylor, freelance trainer and consultant, and
illustrated by the Big Family (Strasbourg), the folder is available in the
following language editions:
English, French, German, Italian, Russian.
Also, through our Information and Documentation centers in various
countries, it is available in:
Bosnian (Latin and Cyrillic version), Croatian, Serbian, Albanian,
Bulgarian, Czech, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Moldovan, Polish,
Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Macedonian and Ukrainian.
The Council of Europe Human Rights educational fact sheets are free of
charge.
The way to apply for them is by sending me an e-mail with detailed
postal address and the number of copies requested.
We usually just send one copy and then the teacher makes photocopies,
but in exceptional cases we can send more copies in English.
PLEASE SPECIFY WHICH LANGUAGE(S) YOU NEED.
Yours sincerely,
Olivia Conrad
Public Relations Attachée
