"There are many epistemologies separate from the
correspondence theory of truth, like pragmatism or
functionalism."
I suggested pragmatism as an approach to "truth" in
relation to film studies earlier when this argument
was younger. It must be said that modern
neo-pragmatism is a bit of a minefield though; for
anyone who isn't aware of them the heated debates
between ardent Pierce/Dewey pragmatist Susan Haack and
self-proclaimed neo-pragmatist Richard Rorty make for
hilarious reading -- Haack's "Manifesto of a
Passionate Moderate" is prophetic in its display of
how cul-de-sacs in philosophy can be extemely
destructive. Odin's "For a semio-pragmatism" is
floating my boat so to speak at the moment, though i
find that it needs more grounded support by
linguist/philosopher Donald Davidson, Rorty etc. to
really show how a pragmatic impulse can determine the
functioning of emergent "truths" in cinema.
happy easter holidays all,
...if your into that sorta thing.
