Right you are Gus, I was thinking of UCSC. And, the mascot of *THE*
Evergreen State College (not Evergreen etc. as I was rudely informed by an
associate who taught there) is the Geoduck, a clam, but a mollusk and
thereby close to slugs in terms of dignity quotient.

The University of California, Santa Cruz, adopted the banana slug as its
mascot. The chancellor vetoed it whereupon there was another campus vote,
and the slug won again. With that he caved to public demand, and the slug
made it.
I suspect Steve is thinking of UCSC instead of UC Santa Barbara. I don't
know about Evergreen.
