UKCRC thought it would be a good idea if I gave regular progress
reports on our activities to this list. Here is the first in the
series.
1. Plan are now far advanced for a UKCRC Computing Grand Challenges
workshop on 25/26 November in NeSC Edinburgh. This will give an
opportunity to all UK researchers to propose Grand Challenges that will
shape the direction of our field. The Call for Proposals will appear
very shortly.
2. UKCRC is now an expert panel of both IEE and BCS, dealing with
all aspects of computing science research, and we have proposed
to CPHC that we have a similar relation to them. This arrangement
has a number of advantages. For instance, it will ensure that the
computing research community speaks with a single voice and that
that voice is taken seriously by the relevant bodies. Also, BCS
and IEE will provide professional support for our activities,
which will significantly increase their impact.
3. We have a continuing series of meetings and other communications with
key people to make the case for computing research. For instance, we are
currently engaged with ESPRC on a number of issues, such as the recent
re-interpretation of the rules on infrastructure costs. We will keep you
uptodate with progress on these issues. We are also preparing input to
various consultation exercises.
4. Our web page is available at http://www.ukcrc.org.uk/ and contains
useful information, including both UKCRC and third party reports.
