Do you mean the Optium meter using blood ketone
electrodes? Medisense are really pushing this, but the
reaction is the old hydroxybutyrate one. By the
company's own research the detection rate with
patients with a blood glucose over 17 mmol/L was only
one in five showing positive ketones. Our Paediatric
team felt that it may have some use in limited
applications, but felt that the detection rate may
lead to a sense of false security for parents and
could result in more admissions for children in DKA.
We have therfore recommended that they are not used.
