medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. December) is the feast day of:
Germar (Geremar) (d. 660(?)) Germar was born in c. 610 in Wardes (France).
He was married for a time, but in c. 647 left his family and became a
monk. In 655 he founded the monastery of Flay in the diocese of Beauvais,
leading the community until his death. The monastery's name was later
changed to St-Germer-de-Flay.
Egwin (d. 717) Egwin was the third bishop of Worcester from 692 on. He is
also regarded as the founder of the monastery of Evesham. He abdicated
from his office in 701 and became a monk there. The eleventh-century vita
of Egwin reports that Egwin was falsely accused and forced to withdraw from
his bishopric. Egwin, to vindicate himself, fettered himself and threw the
key in a river. Laer, on pilgrimage to Rome, he bought a fish in the
market and found the key inside.
Diego of Azevedo (blessed) (d. 1207) Diego is attested as bishop of Osma
(Spain) from 1201. While on a diplomatic mission for his king, Diego along
with his underling Dominic preached against the Albigensians in southern
France. Diego is credited with giving Dominic the impetus to found the
Order of Preachers.
