Conference Announcement and Call for Papers
Postmodernism and Spirituality
Department of Cultural Studies
University of Central Lancashire, Preston
23/24 March 2002
Key Note speakers include: Philippa Berry, David Punter, Scott Wilson
The conference will be organised around three key areas with a final =
plenary
session, which will discuss the question: 'Is this the end of
postmodernism?'
Area One: Spirituality and Knowledge
Topics might include: Science/ Epistemology, prosthesis, machines,
physics
as religion, cyber robotics, knowledge, mathematics.
Area Two: Spirituality and History
Topics might include: teleology, narratives of redemption, apocalypse,
the
millennium, prophets and prophecy, reincarnation.
Area Three: Spirituality and Being
Topics might include: the mind/body split, altered states, the sublime,
incarnation, transcendence/ immanence/ the unrepresentable, addiction,
epiphany, angels.
There will be an exhibition of the work of artist Susie Hamilton who has
provided the image for this poster.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Contributions from the fields of Literary and Cultural Criticism,
Philosophy, Film Studies and History are welcomed. The focus will be
primarily on Representations of Spirituality.
ABSTRACT GUIDELINE
Abstracts should be about 150-200 words in length for a 20-minute
presentation. They should be forwarded on disc or as an email
attachment,
listing name, organisation, contact address, telephone and email
address,
and should include the title of the proposed paper.
The closing date for abstracts is the 31st January 2002. Please note
that
paper presenters need to register for the conference and pay the
registration fee. The conference language is English.
The Conference fee is #95.00. An optional three course conference
dinner
#20.00 is available. Accommodation is available locally please request
details.
