medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I think I was failing to make the distinction between hermits and
recluses/anchoresses. We have Welsh saints like Melangell, Gwenfrewi,
Brigid, who spend some time as genuine hermits then move on - in the case
of Gwenfrewi and Melangell, to found religious communities. But you're
right that most of the later medieval ones are better described as
recluses/anchoresses.
