medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (24. October) is the feast day of:
Felix of Thibiuca (d. 303) Felix was one of the first martyrs of
Diocletian's persecution. He was bishop of Carthage, and refused to hand
over the holy books of his church for destruction. His last words before
his decapitation are memorable (quoted from David Farmer, Oxford Dictionary
of Saints, 4th ed., p. 181): "God, I thank you. I have passed fifty-six
years in this world. I have preserved my chastity; I have observed the
Gospels; I have preached the faith and the truth. Lord God of heaven and
earth, Jesus Christ, I bend my neck as a sacrifice for you, who abides for
ever."
Arethas (d. 524) Arethas lived in Yemen, where he was a leading Christian.
He was killed in a persecution in 524.
Maglorius (d. c. 575) Maglorius was born in c. 500 in Wales, where he was
trained by St. Illtyd. He went from there to Brittany, where he became
abbot of Lammeur and an important missionary. Later he became bishop of
Dol. In the years before his death, though, Maglorius retired to the
island of Sark, where he founded a monastery. Since 963 his relics have
been in the church St-Magloire in Paris, where he still enjoys an active
cult.
Senoch (d. 579 or 576) Senoch was born sometime around 535 in the region
of Poitiers. According to Gregory of Tours, Senoch and three companions
founded a monastery in Touraine (near Tours) that Senoch led as abbot and
that became a model of ascetic rigor. His patronage includes
bridge-building, because Senoch himself is supposed to have erected a very
fine bridge near his monastery.
Evergislus (d. c. 593) Evergislus is one of the first well-attested
bishops of Cologne, where he held office in the last third of the sixth
century. According to legend, while visiting his Flemish homeland,
Evergislus was killed by robbers.
Martin of Vertou (d. 601 (?)) Martin was at first a hermit near Nantes
before he founded the monastery of Vertou there. Besides leading his new
community, Martin was responsible for the foundation of several daughter
houses.
Thaddaeus McCarthy (blessed) (d. 1492) Thaddaeus McCarthy was born in 1455
in Muskerry, Ireland. He became bishop of Ross, Cork, and Cloyne. On his
return from a trip to Rome, he died in Ivrea. McCarthy was beatified in
1895.
