medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. October) is the feast day of:
Severus of Trier (d. 449) Severus was a disciple of SS. Germanus and
Lupus. He accompanied Germanus to England, and later worked as a
missionary in the Moselle valley. He became bishop of Trier in 446.
Thekla of Kitzingen (d. c. 790) Thekla was born in England sometime in the
first half of the eighth century. She became a nun at Wimborne. At
Boniface's request, Thekla followed her sister Lioba to Germany to help
with Boniface's missionary endeavors. In c. 750 she became abbess of the
nunners of Kitzingen and Ochsenfurt in Bavaria. She was especially known
for her care of the poor.
Aurelia (d. 1027) According to a legendary vita, Aurelia was either a
companion of St. ursula or a recluse attached to St. Emmeram's, Regensburg
who died in 1027 after 52 years of enclosure. Supposed relics of Aurelia
were kept in the monastery church.
Theresa of Avila (d. 1582) Pope Paul VI named Theresa a doctor of the
Church in 1970. She was born in Avila in 1515, and at the age of 20
entered the Carmelite convent there. Theresa fell seriously ill soon after
her profession, which coincided with her first visions. As the number of
her visions grew, Theresa published them, attracting strong opponents as
well as supporters. In 1562 Theresa founded in Avila the first house of a
reform branch of the Carmelites, which won papal approval. From 1568 she
also had the support of John of the Cross, who created a male branch of the
same reform. The two founded a total of 17 houses for women and 15 for men
of the "discalced" (shoeless) Carmelites
