medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Sometime back, in a posting regarding the 40 Martyrs of England and Wales, someone expressed the thought that Margaret Clitherow deserved a feast day of her own. I am replying belatedly to this: she does have one (October 21) in the present calendar, as do most of the 40 Martyrs (some are honored together when they died together--e.,g. the 3 Carthusians and one Brigittine honored on May 4). Things get very confusing with the old calender, which I assumed underlies all the daily saints' postings and the new calendar. Some of the confusion may arise from the fact that the 40 Martyrs were canonized October 25, 1970, about the time the new calendar was introduced (they were beati up to that point on the basis of existing _cultus_) and the individual feast days seem to have come in with the canonization of the entire group in 1970. If anyone knows more precisely and correctly about this, please correct me.
