medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There's discussion of the things that happened to apostates
- including imprisonment - in:
Logan, F. Donald. *Runaway Religious in Medieval England
c.1240-1540*. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 1996.
which I looked at in relation to the Nun of Watton case,
for which, see:
Constable, Giles. 'Aelred of Rievaulx and the Nun of
Watton: An Episode in the Early History of the Gilbertine
Order'. In *Medieval Women*, edited by Derek Baker, pp.
205-26. Studies in Church History Subsidia 1. Oxford:
Basil Blackwell, 1978.
Freeman, Elizabeth. 'Nuns in the Public Sphere: Aelred of
Rievaulx's De Sanctimoniali de Wattun and the Gendering of
Authority'. *Comitatus* 27 (1996), pp. 55-80.
and, with apologies for self-advertisement, I've written
about it in *Versions of Virginity in Late Medieval
England* (Cambridge, D.S. Brewer, 2001) and, slightly
differently, in 'Monstrous Purity: Framing the Nun of
Watton', *Mediaevalia* Special Issue 20, 2001, 49-72,
though not really concentrating on imprisonment. I'm sure
there's more out there, but this is just what I happen to
have come across.
