medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (13. September) is the feast day of:
John Chrysostom (d. 407) John Chrysostom (golden-mouth) was a doctor of the
Church and patron saint of preachers. He is regarded as the most
influential doctor of the eastern Church. John was born in c. 350 in
Antioch. He was baptized in c. 368, and withdrew to be a hermit, but had
to give up that life after his health was seriously affected by his ascetic
practices. In 397 he became patriarch of Constantinople. He ran into
conflicts with the court, especially the empress Eudokia, which led to
John's deposition in 403, and afterwards to banishment to Armenia, where he
died. He left behind a large number of sermons and letters.
Maurilius of Angers (d. 453) Maurilius was born in c. 365 in Milan, and
joined Martin of Tours at a young age. He worked for about 40 years as a
priest an monk in western Gaul before becoming bishop of Angers. His
30-year time in office, very active and marked by perfomance of miracles,
led to his rapid veneration. His relics are still in the cathedral of
Angers.
Amatus of Remiremont (d. c. 629) Amatus was born in c. 568 near Grenoble.
At the age of thirteen he entered the monastery of St-Maurice in
Switzerland, moving in 614 to Luxeuil. Then in 620 he and Romarich founded
the monastery Habendum, later renamed Remiremont. Amatus was the first
abbot.
Amatus of Sitten (d. c. 690) Amatis became bishop of Sitten in c. 670. He
was later driven from his office, and died in exile. His relics can still
be found in Douai. In art he is portrayed throwing money into a
river---according to legend, he had done so to keep from being greedy.
Parts of his legend have been inextricably twined with the lives of other
saints of the same name.
