medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
dear learned ones,
here is an editing problem on which i would appreciate some
imput. in a volume containing a collection of articles on
martyrdom in various cultures, the greek word on which the
whole business is based comes up less often than you might
think - in about two articles, in fact.
it currently appears, in greek letters but without diacritics,
in both places.
however, author number one would really like diacritics,
while author number two doesnt want greek letters at all -
he wants to transcribe.
I, of course, want a valid excuse to leave things as they are;
however I know how I feel when I see Icelandic words and
letters mutilated! so, my very specific queries are,
1) how serious a sin is it to leave out the accents in greek?
I had always thought them sort of optional, but I really
have no idea.
2) what would the correct transliteration into the latin alphabet be?
martus ? martys ? both look pretty horrible to me.
thanks in advance for your help,
