'The Worst of Both Worlds - CVD Risk Factors in Sub-Saharan
Africa'
Abstract
Infectious diseases remain the main causes of death in sub-Saharan
Africa. In particular HIV -related diseases, tuberculosis and malaria
have dominated the scene for the last 10 years. Nonetheless non-
communicable diseases are significant causes of morbidity and
mortality in absolute terms. Cerebrovascular disease is a major killer
with rates significantly Higher than in the UK. Diabetes is showing
major increases particularly in urban areas although to date ischaemic
heart disease rates are low. Data on the main NCD risk factors:
lipids, hypertension, obesity, diabetes and Lifestyle will be presented
and the causes discussed. Attempts to control these and measures
required for prevention will be described.
Professor Sir George Alberti is currently the President of the Royal
College of Physicians, Professor of Medicine at the University of
Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Professor of Metabolic Medicine, Imperial
College and President, International Diabetes Federation. He was co-
chairman of the new National Service Framework on Coronary Heart
Disease and succeeds Sir Donald Acheson as the Chairman of the
ICHS.
