medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (25. August) is the feast day of:
Genesius of Arles (d. c. 304) Genesius, a copyist by profession, was
martyred in Diocletian's persecution. His martyrium is attested from a
very early period.
Ebba the Elder (d. 683) Ebba was the daughter of King Aethelfrid of
Northumbria and the sister of Oswald. After the death of her father and
the subsequent conquest of his kingdom, Ebba fled. On her own land she
founded the double monastery of Coldingham on the Scottish border, becoming
the first abbess.
Hunegundis (d. c. 690) According to legend, Hunegundis was ordered to
marry by her parents. However, she convinced her fiance to accompany her
on a pilgrimage to Rome, where she received the veil from Pope Vitalian.
The pair returned to their homeland, and Hunegundis entered the nunner of
Homblieres in Picardy, while her would-be husband became a priest.
Gregory of Utrecht (d. 776) Gregory was a companion of St. Boniface. From
757 on he was the abbot of a monastery in Utrecht, and later for 22 years
was also administrator of the diocese of utrecht. He also led an important
school in Utrecht, which trained many missionaries.
Gaudentius of Gniezno (d. 1006) Gaudentius was the youger brother of
Adalbert of Prague, and accompanied his brother in his unfortunate
missionary ventures to Prussia. Gaudentius escaped the attack that killed
Adalbert. In 1000 he became the first archbishop of Gniezno.
Louis IX (d. 1270) Hard to sum up in a few words, King Louis of France
fortunately had a mother able to rule France for the better part of his
reign, so he could devote himself to religion. Louis was noted as a
mediator and peacemaker, he sponsored ecclesiastical reform, collected
important relics (including the crown of thorns, to house which he had the
Ste. Chapelle built), and led two crusades. He died of illness on the
second of these, so is often regarded as a martyr. He was canonized in
1297. All chapels in French embassies around the world are dedicated to
St. Louis.
