medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear friends and fellow list-members,
I am trying to track down the precise text of the story of the Emperor
Justinian entering Hagia Sophia for the first time and declaring,
"Solomon, I have surpassed you!" A recent book on Justinian attributes
this to a work by an anonymous author known as the "Anonymous of
Banduri," and only gives a citation of Anonymi Narratio, ed. Preger, c.
27. My own extensive searching in OCLC and WorldCat turned up nothing by
a Preger, but I did turn up a work or volume in the Corpus scriptorum
historiae byzantinae entitled "Descriptio S. Sophiae et ambonis," which
volume contains a "Descriptio S. Sophiae Constantinopolitanae,"
apparently edited by an Anselmo Banduri in the eighteenth century. My
own library does not have this particular volume.
Does anyone know of an English translation of this particular story, or
have access to the particular volume of the CSHB (vol. 32?)? If so,
could you send it (i.e., the text of the story, either in English,
Latin, or Greek) on to me? I would like to use it in a class I am
teaching this fall, and would be extremely grateful to whoever could
find this for me.
Many thanks,
Steve Cartwright
