REVISED CALL FOR PAPERS (2002 AAG, Los Angeles, 19-23 March)
Abstracts are invited for the following paper session(s)
REMAPPING THE TERRAIN OF NATION-BUILDING
Organizer: Dr. Adrian N. Mulligan (Western Oregon University)
Application Deadline: 17 August 2001
Although historians have become adept in demythologizing nationalist
temporal narratives, geographers have been slow to engage with
nationalist spatial imaginings. As a result, the process of
nation-building is commonly theorized only when bundled into spaces
produced by nation-states, and consequently fails to account for
extraterritorial influences, or transnational relations.
In order to properly theorize nationalism however, it is essential that
scholars analyze what has been relegated in the national narrative; what
spaces and times have been regarded as contradictory in the nationalist
quest for purity, homogeneity and a spatial-temporal fix. Geographers
are ideally suited to the task of thinking outside the national logic of
space - to uncover for example, the hidden relationship between
nationalism and globalization. This is an especially pertinent task if
we are to forge more progressive models of national identity, or to
perhaps move beyond these constructs completely.
This can and should be a collaborative and comparative undertaking, and
this session seeks research contributions from those interested in this
task of "Remapping the Terrain of Nation-building". Possible areas of
interest include:
-- politics of nationalist identity formation
-- diasporic nationalism
-- globalization
-- transnationalism (contemporary & historical)
-- borders, boundaries, margins, hybridity, liminality
-- (de)(re)territorialization
-- memory, performance
-- citizenship debates
-- nationalism as regulatory discourse (axes of race, class, gender,
sexuality)
-- social production of space and scale as they relate to forging of
national identity
-- impact of telecommunications
Given time constraints, electronic submission is essential. If
interested, please submit abstract (250 word max) and full contact
details by 17 August, 2001 to Adrian Mulligan at [log in to unmask]
