medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
>Can you tell us more about the lengthy fast in August?
In all seven Coptic fasts, as also on Wednesdays and Fridays, you should
avoid meat, eggs, milk, butter and cheese. Fish is also prohibited in
the fasts of Jonah, Lent and the Assumption (they actually do eat fish
in the Assumption-Fast, though they're supposed not to), and also on the
Vigils of the Nativity and the Epiphany. Some people will not eat or
drink till the end of the Divine Liturgy (daily during fasting seasons)
-- i.e. till about 4 or 5 p.m., though the only real requirement for
abstinence from all food and drink is from midnight until the third hour
(9 a.m.).
>the probable weather?
Nor surprisingly, August is probably the stickiest month of the year. A
good time to head north. But I've found that the right approach to
fasting makes it not especially onerous, whatever the weather.
