European multicentre study on congenital toxoplasmosis (EMSCOT)
POSITION: RESEARCH FELLOW
A full-time epidemiology/biostatistics research fellow is required to
support the European Multicentre Study on Congenital Toxoplasmosis. A
relevant postgraduate degree and research experience are desirable.
RESPONSIBILITIES
As the research fellow for the project, the postholder will be expected to
take a major role in data analyses and report writing. EMSCOT is a cohort
study involving over 1300 children born to women who acquired toxoplasma
infection during pregnancy in 1997-1999. About 240 children in the cohort
have congenital toxoplasmosis. The study involves the long-term follow up
of infected and uninfected children to determine the effects of prenatal
treatment on their health. The research fellow will be expected to take a
major role in analyses of the risk of clinical signs and impairment in
children with congenital toxoplasmosis and of the effect of congenital
toxoplasmosis on disability, development, and behaviour, based on a
comparison of infected and uninfected children at 3 years of age.
S/he will also be the project administrator and be responsible for
supervising data entry and checking, and liasing with study centres. The
postholder will take responsibility for the content of the monthly feedback
report to study centres and will deal with data queries. S/he will oversee
data entry for GENET-EMSCOT, which is an exploratory study, looking for
possible associations between genetic markers and congenital toxoplasmosis
or associated neurological complications.
The postholder will be supported by a part-time person who does the data
entry and monthly mailout of parent questionnaires to study centres. Data
management and analysis uses the SAS programme. S/he will be expected to
contribute to the organisation of and preparation of reports for annual
European meetings of the collaboration. Travel to centres is occasionally
necessary. The postholder will be supervised by Ruth Gilbert, the project
leader, and supported by Luuk Gras, the statistician for the project.
DURATION AND FUNDING
The post is funded for 2.5 years but appointment will be for 1 year in the
first instance, renewable for a further 1.5 years. Start date as soon as
possible. Salary is on the RA1A scale (points 4 to 11), starting between
£19,585 and £26,327 (including London weighting of £2,134 pa).
